Overview
The general rule is that you should update or redesign your website every 3 years. Why? Over the course of three years there are major improvements in Internet Technology, from browser software, web design best practices and general web development technologies. From a marketing perspective, it is not uncommon for an organizations business or sales model to become modified, either adding or removing key products or services, or the processes by which your organization operates. Certainly this was the case for EnSky. Our three year old web site was ready for a major overhaul.
Challenges
Like any website design project EnSky's approach begins with evaluation. We evaluated what was working well on the site and what was not working well. The old EnSky website was generating a fair amount of targeted traffic. Over the course of the three years our own search engine optimisation had really paid off, driving EnSky up onto the first page the 3 and 5 result for a query on Google of either "Flash Designers" or "Website Maintenance". We had the traffic, but we were not convincing the visitors to buy our services. The was informational, but it didn't compel visitors to act upon the information. Another weak area was the way we presented our work experience. Our portfolio was pretty under whelming, for a company who had won so many web design awards, our own site was not worthy of a design award. The navigation, although cool when it was initially developed, hampered usability.
By establishing a new approach using the same expertise we employed on our clients sites we created a compelling and functional tool speaks volumes about our capabilities, our experience, clearly drives visitors to buy our services.
Solutions
The whole site is dynamic. XML pages and MySQL databases are processed by PHP templates (which is what you are seeing). We developed comprehensive case study's so that visitors can evaluate our experience by solution or service, and by industry. These are delivered in both Web pages and Flash. Flash if their is a Flash player present, and if there is more than one case study, and a web page if there is no Flash player, or just a link to a single case study, for say a particular EnSky client.
The opening Flash movie has 3 different states and controlled by cookies based on the users session, and when the last time the user was at the EnSky website.
On the first visit you see the whole Flash movie. Once you click into a section of the site, and you come back to the home page, in the same browser session, you only see that last part of the Flash movie. If you go away and come back within 2 weeks, you see a third option just the opening segmant, delivering a random line of marketing information for both branding and markting purposes.
We totally revamped our FAQ section, creating a MySQL database of FAQ Questions, and their respective answers. We then created the windoid effect, which enables us to serve independent FAQ Questions right on the web poge. So for instance if we wanted to answer a technical word or concept or an acronym we add the "XML code" which puts a question mark after the word that pops the windoid console layer, which returns the FAQ record from the database, explaining in more detail, what that word menus. making us more user friendly.
The user can drag the widoid console around the page, and close it once they are finished reading the question and the answer. Then we complied an FAQ section sorted by category, which is helpful for potential customers to quickly ascertain if we are a good match for their needs.
Once your passed the front page the top navigation changes from Flash to DHTML, the menus are semi-transparent with shadows These were designed to mimic the Flash design. One of the cooler features of the site, we were able to accomplish this through the use of the alpha transparency capabilities of png image file format, now widely adopted across all modern browsers.
Because we have been generating such targeted traffic from search engines and directories like Google, and Yahoo, be evaluating our own web stats, we complied a MySQL database of the top search query's and cross reference those with with actual referrer query's. If there is a match, when the web page is displayed, a corresponding message to the query is displayed at the top of the page. For someone who searches for website designers for example on Google, and then clicks on the link to EnSky, the page displays this message.
